Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve is a great day out and a highlight for many people of a trip to Costa Rica. In this guide, I cover everything you need to know to plan a trip to Monteverde Cloud Forest including how to get there, what to bring, what to expect at the reserve and other useful tips.
How to get to Monteverde Cloud Forest
If you’ve hired a car, you’ll have no problem finding your way to Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve. If you don’t have your own transport, you have a few easy options.
Local Bus
If you’re staying in Santa Elena, the cheapest way to get to Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve is to take the local bus. The local 625 bus departs Banco Nacional in Santa Elena for the reserves at 6:15AM, 7:20AM, and 1:15AM. Tickets are $1 each way.
Returning buses depart Monteverde Cloud Forest at 11:30AM, 2PM and 4PM.
Tourist Shuttle
Most hotels or hostels will be offer shuttle transportation to the Reserve. There are a few companies that provide this shuttle service and offer door to door transportation. We took this option because we didn’t wake up in time for the local bus. It is $3USD each way. The shuttle to the reserve runs on the hour from 7AM. The return shuttles run at half past the hour from 10:30AM. The last shuttle is at 4PM when the park closes.
Taxi
Another option is to take a taxi. Taxis to Monteverde Cloud Forest from Santa Elena are $10-15USD depending on where in town you are staying. It’s a reasonable option, particularly if you are with a group.
Practical information for your visit
Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve is open from 7am to 4pm every day.
Tickets are $25USD for foreign tourists. It is cheaper if you’re a Costa Rican resident. It’s also only $12USD if you are a student, so remember to bring along your student card if this applies to you. Updated information on ticket prices can be found here.
You can pay for your ticket at the entrance in cash in USD or Colones or with a credit card. There is no additional surcharge for paying with a credit card.
Do you need a guide?
This is a really tough question and will come down to your personal priorities for your visit. We visited without a guide and had a great day exploring all the beautiful trails at our own pace. It felt really special to be out on the trails and to experience the tranquility of the cloud forest alone.
However, we didn’t see a lot of wildlife. Going with a guide will definitely increase your chances of spotting some of the reserve’s many residents. It’s recommended to book tickets for guided tours in advance, which you can do here.
What to do at Monteverde Cloud Forest
There are a number of trails that weave through the reserve and visit different points of interest. These useful maps are posted at every fork in the trail so it would be hard to get lost. Signs in the park are in both Spanish and English.
One of the main points of interest is the suspension bridge. The bridge gives a different viewpoint than anywhere else in the park, as you really are up in the canopy. The whole reserve is beautiful, but the bridge has to be the highlight for me. It’s a great place to spend a bit of time and try to spot some wildlife from above.
There are a few viewpoints throughout the park that are worth checking out. They are all clearly marked on the map. Being a cloud forest though, there is a decent chance the visibility won’t be very good. We were unlucky and couldn’t see much at all the day we visited.
There is also a small waterfall. If you’re travelling in Costa Rica, this is unlikely to be the most impressive waterfall that you see. However the trail to get there is beautiful and the viewing platform for the waterfall is a great place to try to spot some wildlife from, making it worth the hike.
Facilities at the Cloud Forest
There are a couple of small shops at the entrance to the reserve as well as a restaurant. The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and coffee, and has a deck with a lovely view. It’s a nice place to sit and have a coffee. We spotted several hummingbirds from the deck.
Unlike in most Central American countries, it is safe to drink the tap water in Costa Rica. There is free drinking water at the entrance to the reserve so you can fill up your bottles there.
There is free wifi at the entrance to the Monteverde Cloud Forest. I had run out of data and had to WhatsApp to confirm what time return shuttle we would like, so this came in handy.
There is a clean toilet block at the entrance, but there are no toilets inside the reserve. The staff will allow you to leave to use the toilets and re-enter. Just remember to hold onto the receipt for your ticket as you will need it to re-enter the reserve.
Things to bring with you
The most important thing to bring with you is rain protection. Being a cloud forest, there is likely to be some rain or at least heavy mist while you are there. We visited during rainy season and it rained for about an hour and a half of our 4 hours there. I would recommend wearing a waterproof jacket with a hood.
Hiking boots aren’t necessary as the trails are very well maintained, but enclosed shoes that can get a bit wet or muddy are a good idea.
The best time of year to visit Monteverde Cloud Forest
The best time to visit Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve is in Costa Rica’s dry season, from December to April. It is a cloud forest, so you still might experience some rain, but compared to other times of year this is your best chance at decent weather.
Unfortunately, sometimes we just have to take holidays when we can get them, and can’t wait around for the perfect time of year. If you are planning a trip to Monteverde and it is outside of the December to April period, don’t fear. We visited in October, one of the rainiest months of the year and we still had a great time!
Yes, we had to wear appropriate clothing and come prepared that we might get a bit muddy, but we were lucky enough to have the place almost to ourselves. I’d recommend visiting Monteverde Cloud Forest whenever you can!
Where to stay in Monteverde
You’re absolutely spoilt for choice when it comes to accommodation options in Monteverde. While there are a lot of good budget options, it is the type of place where spending a bit more can get you a lot more. Staying in a cute cabin or cosy treehouse in the jungle can really add to your experience of Costa Rica. If you can afford to splurge, Monteverde is a great place to do it!
Best budget option – If you’re looking for the best, cheap option, Hostel Cattleya is definitely it. It has basic but clean rooms close to the centre. They can help arrange any tours and transport you might need, and have one of the best stocked shared kitchens I’ve ever seen in a hostel.
Best mid-range option – Want your own bungalow tucked away in the lush Costa Rican jungle? El Sol Monteverde is perfect for a romantic escape with a swimming pool with beautiful views over the mountains.
Best luxury option – Luxuriously secluded glass front cabins with views all the way to the ocean. Amalu Monteverde is an absolute dream, featuring outdoor bathtub and the chance to spot toucans in the trees outside without even having to get out of bed. Perfect for a special occasion splurge.
