Getting from Sydney airport to Bondi beach

There are a number of ways to get to Bondi Beach from Sydney Airport.

As the crow flies, Bondi Beach is only about 10km from Sydney Airport. However, public transport connections in the Eastern Suburbs aren’t the best. The train line only runs as far as Bondi Junction so you will need to rely on a combination of train and bus to get to Bondi Beach. It can be a bit of a hassle, especially if you are travelling with lots of luggage.

Which option you take will depend on your travel style and budget. I’ve included all the best ways to get from Sydney Airport to Bondi Beach, from the most convenient to the ultra-budget.

Uber or Other Ride Share App

Getting an Uber is one of the easiest and most convenient ways to get from Sydney Airport to Bondi Beach. Uber can pick up from near the taxi stands, just outside the airport. Through the Uber app you can schedule a pick up, or just order one when you arrive.

The only issue with Uber is the surge pricing during busy times. The price you pay will depend on the time of day and the traffic. Expect to pay more on public holidays or weekends.

Cost: Anywhere from $50 to $100.
Time taken: 30 minutes + traffic

Taxis

Another convenient option to get to Bondi Beach from the airport is to take a taxi. Taxis do not need to be booked in advance. There are signs from inside the airport directing you to the taxi stand. There is usually a person there directing people into taxis.

If you would like to lock in a price, you can book in advance on the 13cabs website.

Cost:: $50 to $80 depending on traffic and time of day.
Time taken: 30 minutes + traffic

Private Transfer

There are lots of companies offering private airport transfers. A private transfer is actually quite affordable and convenient. A transfer usually includes being met at the gate, which can be helpful if you are travelling with a lot of luggage or with children.

You can book a private transfer from Sydney airport here.

Cost: Starting from $70
Time taken: 25 minutes driving time + traffic

Car rental

Renting a car is a good option if you are planning on visiting areas outside of the city. Keep in mind that parking in Bondi Beach can be limited. I would only recommend renting a car if your accommodation comes with parking.

You can rent a car from one of the rental desks at the airport. I recommend comparing prices through DiscoverCars to get the best deal.

Cost: Prices will vary
Time taken: 25 minutes driving time + traffic

Public transport

To get from Sydney Airport to Bondi Beach via public transport is pretty simple. Unfortunately, there is no direct route to Bondi Beach, you will need to make a few connections.

Take the train from the airport to Central Station. At Central, change to the T4 Blue line train to Bondi Junction. From Bondi Junction you can take the 333, 380 or 379 bus to get to Bondi Beach.

Cost: $22.80 ($17.70 is the Airlink train Gate Fee)
Time taken: About 1 hour

The cheapest Way to Get From Sydney Airport to Bondi Beach

The cheapest way to get to Bondi Beach from Sydney Airport is to use public transport, but avoid the hefty gate fee from the airport train stations.

The portion of the train line that runs through the airport is privately owned. To enter or exit the Airlink train stations, there is an additional $17.70 fee. This is added to all train fares when paying with Opal or credit cards. The only way to avoid this fee is to not take the train.

Luckily, there is another option that not a lot of people know about.

The cheapest way from Domestic Airport to Bondi Beach

If you are starting at the Domestic Terminal, you can take the 350 bus to Bondi Junction station. The bus leaves every 10 minutes from the bus stop out the front of Terminal 3. From Bondi Junction, take bus 333, 380 or 379 to Bondi Beach.

Or you can take the 420 bus to Mascot station. From Mascot station, take the T8 train to Central. Change at Central for the T4 Blue line train to Bondi Junction. From Bondi Junction, take bus 333, 380 or 379 to Bondi Beach.

Where to stay in Bondi

Bondi Beach is one of the most touristy areas of Sydney and is filled with great accommodation options for all budgets. As a local, these are my top recommendations for each price range. This is where I recommend friends and family to stay when visiting.

Budget – It’s no joke that Australia is expensive, and Bondi is one of the most expensive post codes. You’re not going to find super cheap accommodation anywhere. The best prices are at backpackers hostels, some of which are not great. By far the best backpackers in Bondi Beach is Wake Up! Bondi.

If you’re travelling with a group or looking for more apartment-style budget accommodation, check out Hotel Bondi. They have reasonable prices and are located right on the beach.

Mid-range – Consider staying at an apartment-style hotel like Adina Bondi. It’s just a few minutes walk to the beach and close to great restaurants and bars.

High-end – Although there are some great hotels in and around Bondi, nothing beats your own seaview apartment. It is an expensive option but if you’re up for a splurge, look for apartments like this one that offer the unparalleled Bondi experience.
